A Love Story with Fashion

There’s something about a love story that stays with you.

Not the loud kind. Not the fleeting kind. The quiet, steady kind, the kind that shapes who you become without you realizing it.

My love story with fashion began when I was very small. Sure I loved Sesame Street and children’s shows, but the minute the Sonny & Cher show came on I was glued to the T.V. to see what Cher was wearing. I would study the album cover of the broadway play Camelot to figure out how to sew a gown and make a crown like Julie Andrews (she played Guinevere) wore in play. Even Gillians Island captivated me because someday I was going to wear the long shimmering gown Ginger wore. I think I even only answered to the name Ginger for a good week when I was about 6 years old.

I never lost my love for fashion, and over time I started drawing my own designs and in 5th grade created a design label called “Liz Ritz.”

This was one of my designs in 5th grade.

I understood that what you put on your body mattered, not for anyone else, but for how it made you feel. I inherently knew how a collar should lay flat or how it should stand up, slightly. The way a skirt should move when you walk in a room. The power of color and how it made you feel when you wore it.

I understood how to show up in the world.

I understood the power of black and white and the bold statement it made. Strong, understated, commanding, but not asking for attention.

I think that is why I’m in love with the show “love story” about John Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. She embodied that understanding as well. She never over did it. She never chased. She simply was. That’s what made her unforgettable.
