🚨WARNING SENSITIVE POST🚨-When the Gym Smells More Like a Locker Than a Lifestyle

Let’s be honest: there are two types of people who stop you mid-workout at the gym — the ones who are deadlifting twice your body weight, and the ones whose scent hits you harder than their reps.

We’ve all been there. You hop on the treadmill, feeling motivated and hydrated, and suddenly a cloud of “Eau de Forgotten Laundry” rolls over you. It’s not just distracting — it’s spiritual warfare for the nostrils.

Before we shame the stinky, let’s be real: gym funk happens to everyone. Sweat is a badge of hard work, but bacteria love a good sweat session just as much as we do. The problem isn’t the sweating — it’s when that sweat lingers longer than your last relationship.

Some of us are using workout gear that’s been through more cycles than our spin class. Synthetic fabrics trap odor, and when mixed with questionable detergent and skipped laundry days… well, you get the picture (and unfortunately, the smell). I hate to throw away good race shirts or Lululemon tops, but unfortunately, I do make it a regular habit if they get the “funk”.

Here’s the point — it might not even be you. Even if you’re washing regularly, the laundry detergent you’re using might be working against you. A lot detergents are packed with synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals that mask odors instead of removing them. Over time, those residues build up on your clothes, trapping bacteria and making your “clean” gym outfit smell like it’s been living in a hockey bag.

That’s why switching to a non-toxic detergent can be a game-changer. I recently ordered from Clean People — they use plant-based ingredients that actually break down odor-causing bacteria without the chemical overload. No fake “fresh linen” perfume, no weird film left behind — just clean clothes!

So, in the spirit of being good gym citizens, here’s a quick refresher:

  1. Wash your gear often. If it touched your skin and got sweaty, it’s laundry day — not tomorrow, not “after one more wear.”
  2. Use a detergent that actually cleans, not conceals. (See above).
  3. Air out your shoes. Trust me on this one.
  4. Deodorant is your friend. Apply liberally. Reapply if necessary.
  5. Remember: scent travels faster than gossip.

The gym is a community — and communities thrive when we all pull our weight (and wash it, too). So let’s raise the bar — not just on our bench press, but on our hygiene standards too!!

Your fellow gym-goers (and their noses) will thank you  Love, Erin
