HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and FEASTING. However, the abundance of rich food can derail the healthiest of goals. I’ve got a few tricks and tips to help you with making healthy choices.
Plan your Plate
Survey the spread. Take a moment and survey what is being offered and rather than piling food on your plate aimlessly. Aim for the foods that make you feel good and balanced. I go for vegetables first and make those fill half of my plate. Lean protein (turkey) I put about 1/4 lean protein on my plate, and finally the stuffing and potatoes get the last spot on my plate.
Mindful Eating
Try very hard not eat “distracted”. Snacking and munching aimlessly can lead to over eating during the holidays. Here are a couple of ways to help yourself.
Eat slowly, take time chew your food and chew slowly and appreciate each bite. Pay attention to hunger cues from your body. Stop eating when you are FULL (NOT STUFFED).
Stay Hydrated
It is so easy to confuse thirst for hunger, especially amidst a ton of delicious food and sweets.
Drink tons of water throughout the day. Aim for a glass of water before each meal and keep a glass of water handy during the day of festivities.
Limit sugary drinks opt for water instead.
Bring a Healthy Dish
If you are attending Thanksgiving at someone else’s house offer to bring the healthy dish. This ensures that there is at least one option you can eat that is healthy.
Thanksgiving is a celebration, enjoy your family, and good food, while utilizing some of these tips and maintain healthy eating habits.
