Coaches Corner Stephanie Phillips

Stephanie has worked out with me since 2019 she usually works quietly and with a strong force. She works full time and graciously, determinedly, and kindly gets her workouts in at Lifetime Fitness Club.

I’m honored she spends some of that time taking classes and trains with me. I asked her some questions that I think will inspire you as much as they inspired me.

  1. How long have you been a member of Lifetime?

I have been a member of Lifetime since 2018. We moved to Minnesota in 2017 from New Zealand where I used to do boot camp classes on the beach on the beach rain or shine…I loved it…It took me awhile to get used to the indoor classes again but given the Minnesota winters it very quickly became a blessing and disco Fridays surely helped.

2. What motivates you to get to the gym?

Since we were new to Minnesota, I thought it would be a good way to meet people. It took a while (especially with COVID) and now it feels great to see my friends every morning. As I work from home, going to the club gets me out of the house and I love how I feel after a good workout. I exercise to stay in shape physically and mentally. As much as I enjoy it, I would never do it on my own. Exercising in a group setting is the only way I can manage to do it regularly.

3. What little tricks do you do to get to the gym when you don’t want to workout?

I dress in my gym clothes every morning. I’m lucky to have flexible work hours so whether I feel like it or not I show up at the gym. Once you are there, it’s half the battle and never once I do I think “I wish I had stayed home”.

4. Did you play sports or dance in high school or college?

I didn’t play any team sports. I had a horse and did equestrian jumping for many years. Living in the Alps we also skied every weekend. I was more raised to enjoy the outdoors than play sports.

5. What advice would you give someone who wants to add working out to their life but doesn’t know where to start?

First don’t be hard on yourself. Be kind to yourself. In the US, everything seems to be a competition, I think taking care of oneself is so important and it is a personal process. It might feel daunting but all you need to do is TRY…and keep trying until you find a class or activity that you are having fun with.

Enjoy!!
