Fitness Tip~3 Reason to Strength Train After 40

  1. Combat Age-Related Muscle Loss/ As we age, our bodies naturally lose muscle. The phenomenon is called sarcopenia or poverty of the flesh. As early as 30, we can loss approximately 3-5% of muscle mass per decade, which accelerates after the age of 60. A powerful way to counteract that is strength training.

Benefits:

*Strength training improves your metabolism. Increased muscle mass boosts your resting metabolic rate, helping you with fat loss.

*Increased Functional Strength. Everyday tasks become easier, from lifting groceries to playing with your kids and your grandkids.

2. Support Bone Health/ Bone density decreases as we age, particularly in women after menopause, which leads to higher risk of osteoporosis. Weight bearing exercises stimulate bone formation and help maintain or even increase bone density.

Benefits:

*Reduce the risk of fractures. When you lift weights you strengthen not just the muscles but the bones too, making them less susceptible to fractures.

*Improve posture and joint health. Strong muscle support and stabilize your joints, enhancing your posture reducing the risk of arthritis-related pain.

3. Boost Mental Health and Cognitive Function/ Research shows that regular physical activity including strength training, can reduce the symptoms of depression, improve mood, and enhance overall mental well-being.

Benefits:

*Cognitive Function. Resistance training can improve cognitive functions, such as memory and attention.

*Stress Relief. When you exercise you release endorphins, which can reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being, making you feel more energized.

*Social Engagement. Joining a strength training group or class can foster connections, combating the feeling of isolation and loneliness that happen with age.

Incorporating strength training into your routine after the age of 40 isn’t just about muscle building it is the best investment in your over all health and well-being.

Start small, get eyeballs on you with a personal trainer or coach (a coach that works with all ages.)

Be consistent even if you only have 15 minutes to strength train it is better than nothing.

Get out there and get strong.

Enjoy!!
