Let get serious about strength training

I’m going to start an on going conversation with you all, about strength training and why. As we age, it is VITAL to either keep strength training or start doing it NOW!!

Here are the reasons why.

Sarcopenia. Learn this word, understand it and never forget it. In Greek it literally means “poverty of the flesh”. In our world it means loss of muscle mass that naturally occurs as we age. However, it is exacerbated by inactivity and a poor diet. We do not want to have sarcopenia occur as we age.

Strength Training: Counteracts Sarcopenia by stimulating muscle protein synthesis, which can preserve and even increase muscle mass.

Why does this matter? More muscle mass, more anti-inflammatory agents released in the body/ less need for insulin. More fat…more inflammation !!

Metabolic Health. Improve your metabolic health with strength training. Strength training will enhance insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. By strength training you boost your resting metabolic rate too, translation…you maintain a healthy weight.

Lowering your risk of fractures. Strength training applies stress on the bones, which encourages them to become stronger and denser. Increasing bone density YOU reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Functional Performance. Strength training improves strength, balance, and coordination. I don’t know about you but I want to maintain my independence as I age and reduce the risk of falling.

Diabetes 2 is on the rise, and our inactivity is on the rise, making us all susceptible to all of these factors happening to us. By strength training 2-3 times a week you can reverse a lot damage you’ve already done or help you get started on making your future so much more enjoyable and vibrant.

One tip I will tell you: all of you need eyeballs on you when you either start a strength training program or need a strength training program created for you. Proper form, what poundage to use, how to organize your workouts, and why you do or don’t do certain exercises is crucial to your new strength training journey.
