I started making my own seasoning blends early in my marriage because my husband has a terrible allergy to MSG which (at least 30 years ago) was so pervasive in all packaged brands.
Now I just prefer it since it is easy, I can customize them to my own taste, and making it in bulk makes for great gifts, particularly for my kids who love and are used to our homemade blends.
I have included measurements for a bulk batch which makes about five 4 oz spice jars, and a scaled down version for those of you that just need some for your own use.

Ingredients

Bulk Batch (makes about five 4oz jars)
  • 6 tbsp course or flake salt
  • 3/4 cup garlic powder
  • 3/4 cup onion powder
  • 1/4 cup ground thyme
  • 1/4 cup rubbed sage
  • 1/2 cup paprika
  • 1/4 cup black pepper
  • 1/2-1 tbsp cayenne pepper (optional, to taste)
Single Household Batch
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp ground thyme
  • 2 tsp rubbed sage
  • 4 tsp paprika
  • 2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4-1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, to taste)

Method

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Whisk gently to combine. Bottle in airtight container(s).
    NOTES
Pro tip - whenever mixing a spice blend that contains pepper or finely ground spices, it's a great idea to wear a face mask as it tends to get airborne easily and the sneezing quickly ensues. Plus, isn't it nice to have a use for all those darned masks that we have hanging around the house?
