This recipe can be made for a Sunday Morning, mornings up at the cabin, a special brunch, and for just a normal Saturday morning that the family sleeps in. I would make the dough the night before and let it rise all night in an oiled bowl that is loosely covered. Depending on when you want to serve these golden gems you may want to get up a few hours before the family so you can let the rolls rise a second time. They are worth it.
Ingredients
Sourdough Rolls
- 1/2 cup active sourdough starter
- 3/4 cup warm milk (90°-100°)
- 3 tbsp softened unsalted butter
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 3/4 cup flour
Filling
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
Frosting
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 tbsp milk
Instructions
- In a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, combine the active sourdough starter and warm milk. Stir until the starter is dissolved. Add the butter, egg, and sugar and mix.In a separate small bowl, combine flour and salt. Stir together and add to the mixer and mix until dough is kneaded and is pulling away from the sides of the bowl. In another large bowl that is well oiled with vegetable oil, place the kneaded dough in the bottom and loosely cover and let sit for 6-8 hours or overnight. After 6-8hours or the next morning, dump dough on a clean counter that is slightly floured (so dough doesn't stick), with a rolling pin roll out the dough into a large rectangle (about 1/4 inch thick).Meanwhile, in small bowl combine melted butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar and mix well.Spread this mixture onto top of the rectangle of dough. Then take one long side of the dough and tightly roll it towards you until you can gather the edges and pinch them together. Using a knife or bench scraper cut the Now tube of dough and filling into 2 inch slices. Grease a 9×13 glass pan with butter and set each slice cut side down in the pan. Once the pan is full cover loosely with plastic wrap. Let rise for 2-3 hours.Preheat the oven to 350° uncover the risen rolls and place in the oven for 31 minutes. Stir together the powdered sugar, butter, vanilla, and milk and drizzle on top of rolls when they are still warm the frosting will get in all the cracks of the rolls coat the whole pan. HAPPY EATING!!
